ChatGPT starts testing ads: a new channel, not recommendations for sale

On February 9, 2026, OpenAI began testing advertising in ChatGPT in the United States for logged-in adults using Free and Go. The official page was subsequently updated, but explicitly identifies its original publication date. For an accurate editorial calendar, February 9 marks the beginning of testing, rather than a later international expansion.

What changes for advertisers

ChatGPT now belongs in conversations about paid distribution, not only ad production. A consumer can describe a need, compare options and encounter advertising within the same conversational environment. For marketers, that suggests an opportunity to build messages around a specific problem without assuming access to the person's private conversation.

OpenAI says advertising remains separate from answers, advertisers do not influence those answers, and conversations remain private. These principles matter commercially. Purchasing an ad should not be sold to a client as purchasing an organic recommendation. A media placement and a strategy for visibility within unpaid answers are different propositions, with different expectations and responsibilities.

What the test does not establish

The initial US test does not demonstrate immediate availability in Romania, nor does it make ChatGPT a universally accessible advertising channel. It also cannot, by itself, provide a credible acquisition-cost forecast for an individual business. Any sales projection needs evidence from that business's own testing, after access and available tools have been confirmed.

For a service company, the preparation is straightforward: explain the problem being solved, who needs the service, under what circumstances, and why someone should request a quote. Conversational advertising will not repair a confusing landing page, a broken form or an unsupported promise. Getting ready for the channel therefore begins with the company's own offer and website, rather than a speculative media budget.

A realistic first step

Prepare an exploration brief, not a performance promise: eligible audience, offer, landing page and the commercial question the test should answer. Separately confirm account access and applicable market conditions. If access is unavailable, treat the materials as preparation. Do not present an imaginary campaign as an already operational service, and do not confuse interest in a new channel with evidence that it works economically.

How to decide whether it belongs in your business

Evaluate the announcement through one practical question: which problem does it solve in the existing process? Separate the supplier's demonstration from an outcome you can verify inside your company. A tool may look impressive in an example and encounter meaningful limits when it meets your products, approvals and exceptions. A technical possibility is not a revenue promise.

Set evaluation criteria in advance: factual accuracy, customer relevance, total working time and ease of checking. Include revision time, not only the moment when the first output appears. For advertising and sales, examine enquiry quality and the path to a commercial outcome rather than automatically attributing every change to the new tool. Decide who will review the evidence before any expansion is approved.

The team keeps responsibility

Use approved information and access proportionate to the task. Personal data, confidential material and image rights require separate checks. No product announcement replaces the company's responsibilities to customers or its existing agreements. Name the person who approves output before external use, and document the sources behind important claims. If a decision cannot be explained clearly, it is not ready to become an automated routine.

The practical conclusion is to test narrowly, compare against the current process and expand only what evidence supports. For a small business, a simple, repeatable workflow may be more valuable than hurried adoption of every new feature. Keep a way to work without the new platform, too, so a promise to the customer does not depend on the continued availability of one particular function.
